Commercial solar connection pathways on the Western Power network

Commercial solar connection is a separate workstream from equipment selection. This guide distinguishes Western Power's current technical review pathway from WA reforms that remain under consultation.

Commercial solar connection is not an administrative step added to a finished design. It is a design input. The proposed inverter capacity, export arrangement, point of connection and local network conditions can change what is accepted and what information is required.

For a Western Australian business on the South West Interconnected System, the useful distinction is between the requirements operating now and reforms that have been proposed but are not yet in force.

The current starting point

Western Power's technical guidance identifies a group of small solar applications that in most cases will not require technical review. The conditions include a solar PV system using approved products, total inverter capacity of 5 kVA or less, a location within listed service areas and supply that remains within Western Power's standard supply.

Where a proposal does not meet those conditions, Western Power says further checks are required and the application may require technical review. During that review, Western Power assesses whether the proposed inverter-based system meets the requirements for connection. If it does not, alternative system or supply arrangements may be identified.

That distinction matters for commercial sites because a larger rooftop does not imply that the network can accept the preferred inverter or export capacity at the existing point of connection.

Information that should be settled before application

The exact submission requirements depend on the project and current Western Power process. A controlled project record should nevertheless establish the information that drives the pathway:

  • the site and point of connection
  • existing supply, metering and embedded generation
  • proposed inverter and array capacity
  • single-phase or three-phase configuration
  • intended export arrangement
  • protection, control and communications approach
  • changes required at the switchboard or connection
  • equipment approval and technical documentation

The record should distinguish verified site information from design assumptions. That allows the project team to update one decision basis when network advice changes rather than reconstructing it from quotes and email.

Export and self-consumption are different questions

A system may be sized to serve daytime load while still requiring a defined export setting. Conversely, an export limit can materially change the commercial case where generation exceeds on-site demand for long periods.

The July 2026 consultation put seven proposals on the table

On 20 July 2026, the WA Government opened consultation on seven distributed energy proposals. For businesses, the published direction included a proposed single connection process for systems up to 1 MVA and faster commissioning using the Common Smart Inverter Profile Australia for systems up to 200 kVA. The consultation also proposed greater visibility of distribution network capacity.

At review on 14 August 2026, these were proposals. Submissions were due by 5pm AWST on 18 August 2026, and detailed regulatory proposals were expected to follow. The proposed capacities and process should not be represented as current Western Power approval settings.

A connection record should survive the project

The final record should retain the application basis, network correspondence, approved configuration, export settings, technical documents, commissioning evidence and later changes. This supports handover, maintenance, expansion and any future review of why the system was configured as installed.
