Guidance current at 14 August 2026 states that AC-coupled Powerwall 3 configurations are not supported in any capacity. An existing solar inverter cannot be retained and the battery AC coupled alongside it, and that now applies regardless of whether the existing inverter holds CEC approval.
Two pathways remain. New solar can be wired directly into the Powerwall 3 integrated inverter, or suitable existing PV can be migrated onto that inverter with the original unit removed. Both remain subject to current network and installation requirements.
Position as at 14 August 2026. This supersedes guidance issued on 6 August, which treated AC coupling to a CEC-approved inverter as unsupported but under review. That distinction no longer applies. Three-phase supported configurations remain under review. Confirm the current position with Tesla and the network operator before designing or quoting.
The rule change behind this sits at the network, not the product
The technical requirements for new and upgraded rooftop solar and battery systems in the South-West Interconnected System changed from 1 May 2026, under Western Power's WEM Procedure for Standard Small User Facilities. Energy Policy WA's installer guidance, last updated 4 August 2026, treats an AC-coupled battery added to an existing inverter as an upgrade, which brings the whole installation within the new requirements rather than leaving it under the arrangement the original system was connected under.
That is the mechanism worth understanding, because it explains why the constraint applies to the configuration rather than to the battery. The broader requirements are covered in the May 2026 changes to solar and battery requirements.
Assessment for an existing-solar customer starts with the inverter
For a customer who already has solar, the question at assessment is whether the existing PV can be migrated onto the Powerwall 3 integrated inverter. Designing around retaining the existing inverter is not a supported arrangement under current guidance.
Migration is the relevant pathway, and it is settled before a quote is issued rather than discovered at commissioning.
Registration needs the testing tool and the NMI before anyone attends
CSIP-AUS is the communications standard the Western Australian network uses to interact with distributed energy resources. Registration is a commissioning step, and two things need to be in hand before it can be completed: access to the Installer Testing Tool, and the site NMI.
Export power is required during the process, because Synergy validates the connection against actual export. A registration attempted on a site that cannot export at the time will not complete.
The registration path runs through the Powerwall interface: Advanced Settings, then CSIP Australia, then the NMI, then Start, which begins the testing runs.
The export limit is set by the network operator, not the designer
The Powerwall 3 export limit must be configured to the requirement set by the distribution network service provider for that site. In practice that is either 5000W or no export.
This is a network condition rather than a design choice, and it should be confirmed against the connection approval for the specific property rather than carried across from a previous job.
Two failures account for most registration problems
Where CSIP-AUS does not appear as an option, three things are worth checking in order: that the grid code is set up correctly, that the firmware is current, and that the Powerwall 3 is present on site and has been commissioned properly. The option not appearing is usually a commissioning or configuration state rather than a fault.
Where registration returns an authentication failure, the cause is generally that remote access is not active. The customer needs to enable service mode for the registration to authenticate.
Three-phase supported configurations are still under review
The Australian Powerwall 3 is a single-phase unit and is not a native three-phase battery inverter. A multi-phase site requires Tesla-approved system architecture and phase allocation, and the supported configurations for three-phase properties in Western Australia remained under review as at 14 August 2026.
Any installation that requires an engineering assessment is not currently supported and will not receive network approval.
Tesla has advised channel partners that a dedicated three-phase Powerwall 3 is planned for future release, which bears on how a three-phase property should be assessed now.
Current documentation governs the individual job
The related technical conditions for mixed Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems, including the supported quantities and the unsupported metering arrangements, are set out in Powerwall 3 compatibility with existing Powerwall 2 systems and in the firmware bulletin.
This bulletin is a dated record and is not a commissioning procedure. Current Tesla documentation, the connection approval for the specific property, and the network operator's current requirements apply to the individual job. Where they conflict with anything recorded here, they govern.
